2 Little Stars Helps Raise Funds for the Les Turner ALS Foundation and ALS Association St. Louis Chapter
St. Louis, MO (November 6, 2008) – 2littlestars.com, a stylish, online children’s boutique specializing in unique customized baby blankets, tag blankets, burp cloths, bibs, and personalized accessories, announced today that it will be raising money for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a motor neuron disease, benefitting the Les Turner ALS Foundation and the ALS Association. Ten percent of the proceeds from the sale of its American Pastime Adult Throw Blankets will be donated to both organizations through December 31, 2008.
Lou Gehrig first brought international attention to the disease in 1939 when he abruptly retired from baseball after being diagnosed with ALS. Based on U.S. population studies, a little over 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. That's 15 new cases a day. It is estimated that as many as 30,000 Americans have the disease at any given time. Most people who develop ALS are between the ages of 40 and 70, with an average age of 55 at the time of diagnosis. However, cases of the disease do occur in persons in their twenties and thirties. ALS is a very difficult disease to diagnose. To date, there is no one test or procedure to ultimately establish the diagnosis of ALS. It is through a clinical examination and series of diagnostic tests, often ruling out other diseases that mimic ALS, that a diagnosis can be established.
“This disease has affected us personally and we want to be able to help other families who are suffering with this horrible disease and help fund research to find a cure,” said Lisa Callanan and Christina Tedesco, co-founders of 2 Little Stars. “With your 2 Little Stars purchase, you are partnering with us to do the same.” Lisa Callanan’s mother Gail Novosel passed away from ALS in November 2000, as well as her Aunt Irene and Uncle Bill. Christina Tedesco’s brother-in-law’s father, Tom Babcock, passed away from ALS last year.
2 Little Stars is pleased to announce the affinity partnership with the Les Turner ALS Foundation (www.lesturnerals.org/affinitypartners.htm) to promote the American Pastime Blanket throughout their organization. The Les Turner ALS Foundation began with one patient and a dream; today it serves more than 600 patients annually and its membership is comprised of people living with ALS (PALS), their friends and families, healthcare professionals, researchers and corporate leaders. The Foundation is one of the nation's largest independent ALS organizations and has raised more than $33 million to fight Lou Gehrig's disease. Les Turner ALS Foundation’s mission supports medical research into the cause, treatment and cure of ALS; clinical and support services for patients and families living with ALS; and dissemination of information about the disease.
2 Little Stars is also partnering with the ALS Association, St. Louis Chapter (www.alsa-stl.org) to raise funds for its organization. The ALS Association, St. Louis Regional Chapter was founded in 1984 to serve the needs of those living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and their caregivers. The St. Louis Regional Chapter focuses primarily on helping local patients and families who live with ALS and the National Office focuses primarily on research and advocacy. The ALS Association (National Office and the St. Louis Regional Chapter) operates under a shared mission: to help people living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and to leave no stone unturned in search for the cure.
“2 Little Stars social mission is to support organizations that are in need of funding for research and development to help find a cure for the many serious and fatal diseases that affect all of us,” added Callahan and Tedesco. “We strive to assist the organizations that advocate awareness and support to families suffering from these horrible diseases. Supporting organizations such as Les Turner ALS Foundation and the ALS Association is just one way 2 Little Stars can help give back to make our children’s futures a better place!”
